Best bets: Have a Smurfy time at the movies

"Cowboys and Aliens" may be the most-anticipated movie of the summer that does not include an already-established franchise. ( Harry P., we're looking at you.) Daniel Craig plays a loner with an unexplained shackle around his wrist who finds himself in a Western town ruled by Harrison Ford. And then, apparently, the aliens come. Director Jon Favreau rejected 3-D for this one, saying it wasn't appropriate for a Western. Can't disagree with that. (Opens July 29.)

In "Crazy, Stupid, Love," Steve Carell plays a guy who's gobsmacked to learn that his wife (Julianne Moore) wants a divorce. Ryan Gosling is the stud who takes hapless Carell under his wing and tries to help him move on, but has his own love issues with a woman played by Emma Stone. So lots of your typical rom-com humor, but Carell manages to lift everything he's in above the ordinary. (Opens July 29.)
